Why Beta Sitosterol Works

Beta-sitosterol is the active ingredient in saw palmetto berries, which have been used for centuries to treat patients with prostate and urinary problems. Each Lyco-Prostate capsule contains 300 mg of beta-sitosterol. You would have to eat 2 lbs. of saw palmetto to get the same amount of beta-sitosterol as we have in ONE tablet. MAXIMUM PROSTATE is 3000 times more beta sitosterol than saw palmetto.

Beta-sitosterol is the major phytosterol in most plants. Although sitosterol and its related compound, sitosterolin, are chemically similar to cholesterol, they are poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. This poor absorption makes sitosterol/sitosterolin a popular supplement for controlling cholesterol levels -- due largely to an interference with normal cholesterol absorption from the diet.

Beta-sitosterol also appears to modulate immune function, inflammation and pain levels through its effects on controlling the production of inflammatory cytokines. This modulation of cytokine production and activity may help control allergies and reduce prostate enlargement. Click on the link at the bottom of the page for more information.

Lycopene Linked to Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

A high level of lycopene in the blood serum correlates to a lower risk of prostate cancer, according to new research published in the latest edition of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers from the US National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, led by Dr Tara M. Vogt, focused on 437 men, some 209 of whom had prostate cancer. Vogt's team wanted to find conclusive evidence that the level of carotenoids such as lycopene found in the body were related to the incidence of prostate cancer, since earlier studies had given mixed results.

Carotenoids are found in a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, watermelon and spinach, and include lutein and zeaxanthin as well as lycopene. They have been linked to a number of potential health benefits such as cancer prevention and lung health.

The team discovered that men with the highest levels of serum lycopene had a 35 per cent lower risk of developing prostate cancer than those with the lowest levels. While they also found that intake of other carotenoids was linked to an increase in prostate cancer levels, none of the findings were statistically significant.

Vogt's team also wanted to discover why prostate cancer rates were higher in black men than in white, and both the control and the study group contained comparable numbers of men from both backgrounds.

They discovered that the correlation between carotenoid levels and prostate cancer risk were similar in both black and white men but that serum lycopene levels were significantly lower in blacks than in whites. This, they claimed, could explain why prostate cancer levels are higher in blacks than in whites.

"Our findings provide support for the protective role of lycopene in prostate carcinogenesis," Vogt said. "Hypotheses that other individual carotenoids are associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer were not supported."

Lignans Supplement Is Benefiting MEN'S HEALTH

The lignan content of flax bodes well for the use of this plant in men's health.

Lignans Lower Risk

Positive research on the essential fatty acids in flax helped boost sales of flax supplements in recent years, even as overall dietary supplement sales sagged. In the non-herbal specialty supplement category, sales of flaxseed supplements were up 52% percent in the year ending August 2001. More recent research has focused on flax lignans, a type of phytoestrogen that occurs in higher concentrations in flax than in any other plant. Population studies show that a high intake of lignans is associated with lower rates of heart disease and certain cancers. Lignans have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities and, as phytoestrogens, can help regulate hormone levels -- including those responsible for supporting prostate health.

More than half of men over the age of 50 experience symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and a 2000 Gallup Focus Report on the market for nutritional supplements projects above-average growth in the incidence of prostate disorders between 1999 and 2010. While both soy and flax contain phytoestrogens, flax lignans appear to target prostate tissues more specifically than do soy isoflavones.

LinumLife is a shelf-stable powder standardized to 3.5% to 6% lignans, measured as SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, the main lignan in flax). The product not only obviates the stability problems encountered with other flax ingredients, but also provides 10-30 times more lignans than whole flaxseed or flaxseed oil. LinumLife is produced from flax hulls via a proprietary process that utilizes no solvents, additives, or other chemicals. The ingredient has a neutral, slightly sweet flavor, and because it is highly concentrated and used in only small amounts, has no effect on the flavor profile of finished products, says Laurent Leduc, president of Acatris' North American Health Division, Minneapolis.
