5-HTP
FOR RESTFUL SLEEP AND MUCH MORE!
A safe and a natural treatment for:
- Insomnia
- Weight Loss
- Depression
- Ease migraine pain
- Increase tolerance to the pain of fibromyalgia
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan
is the amino acid that is the
intermediate step between tryptophan and serotonin. Tryptophan is an essential
amino acid that must be acquired through the consumption of food containing
protein, as the body cannot synthesize it. Of the eight essential amino acids,
tryptophan is the least common (only about 1 percent of the protein) and is
used up rapidly by the body. Approximately 90 percent of the tryptophan available
to the body is used in protein synthesis and the other 10 percent is divided
between the production of serotonin and niacin. It is felt that modern lifestyles
full of stress and the poor dietary habits practiced by many today contribute
to lower serotonin levels in the brain. These lowered serotonin levels have
been associated with depression, headaches, insomnia, PMS, fibromyalgia, chronic
pain, sugar and carbohydrate cravings, and altered moods
.
5-HTP has been widely used
and studied in Europe since 1970's,
and has been available by prescription in the United States for several years.
During this time 5-HTP has been studied widely and its many properties noted.
In 1994 5-HTP was introduced as a dietary supplement.
When made in the body, 5-HTP is manufactured
in the intestines from the tryptophan the body obtains from protein containing
foods.. The supplement form of 5-HTP is extracted from the Griffonia seed. The
Griffonia tree is grown primarily in Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
Some research suggests that 5-HTP can be safely used in doses of up to 100 milligrams
(mg) per day. It is clear that large excesses of serotonin in the peripheral
circulation can cause cardiovascular disease and other adverse effects, so caution
should be used to avoid large doses of 5-HTP which could result in the overproduction
of serotonin.
COMMON USES OF 5-HTP:
INSOMNIA:
In studies with patients suffering from insomnia, 5-HTP was shown to reduce
the time required to fall asleep and improved the quality of sleep.
DEPRESSION:
Some forms of depression have been attributed to 5-HTP deficiencies. Patients
with these forms have shown improvement with 5-HTP supplementation. Clinical
trial results have shown 5-HTP and the antidepressants, imipramine and fluvoxamine
to have similar effects.
MIGRAINES:
Clinical trials showed 5-HTP reduced the frequency and severity of migraines
with significantly fewer side effects than prescription drugs.
FIBROMYALGIA:
It has been shown that 5-HTP increases serotonin synthesis which increases the
body's pain tolerance and sleep quality. Patients with fibromyalgia taking 5-HTP
reported improvement in their symptoms of insomnia, depression, anxiety, morning
stiffness and the number of painful areas.
OBESITY:
5-HTP creates a feeling of fullness which satisfies a person's appetite sooner.
This enables the person to more easily stay on their diet. It has also been
shown to decrease the intake of carbohydrates in obese patients.
Many successful studies using 5-HTP have shown
that by elevating the serotonin levels in the body 5-HTP can be helpful in dealing
with many conditions which seem to result from the depressed serotonin levels.
A natural way to deal with many conditions, 5-HTP appears to be the choice of
many who do not wish to use prescription drugs.
