ALPLR-3010 ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID:
THE UNIVERSAL ANTIOXIDANT

Extremely important nutrient in the
Prevention of a variety of health problems.

• Lipoic Acid and Diabetes
• Lipoic Acid and Cataracts
• Lipoic Acid and HIV

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a relatively unknown nutrient that has been researched in numerous clinical and laboratory experiments. First classified as a vitamin, Alpha lipoic acid was found to be synthesized by both animals and humans, and is now considered to be an extremely important nutrient in the prevention of a variety of health problems.

Alpha-lipoic acid was discovered over 50 years ago and is called the, "Universal Antioxidant" because it is a potent scavenger of free-radicals in both aqueous and fat soluble portions of our cells. Lipoic acid not only quenches free-radicals, but can help to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C and glu-tathione. Antioxidants work their magic by giving up electrons in order to neutralize radicals that would otherwise remove them from intact cellular membranes. Lipoic acid is able to extend the useful life of antioxidants such as those mentioned above by restoring their missing electrons. Most of this recycling of electrons is performed by dihy-drolipoic acid, which is formed by the body directly from lipoic acid .

Lipoic Acid and Diabetes:
ALA has been shown to reduce diabetic neuropathy, a form of nerve damage associated with a large percentage of diabetics. A large double-blind study in Germany examined seventy-three adult-onset diabetics who were randomly assigned to receive several hundred milligrams per day of Alpha-lipoic acid, or a placebo. After a period of 4 months, the placebo group continued to show a deterioration in nerve function, compared to a significant improvement in the patients taking the Alpha-lipoic acid supplements. Alpha-lipoic acid appears to work in diabetic neuropathy by reducing high levels of oxidative stress at the cellular level and by activating enzymes that play a key role in the utilization of glucose.

Lipoic Acid Cataracts :
Lipoic Acid has been shown to reduce the incidence of cataracts in a variety of animal studies. These studies suggest that in cases of diabetes induced cataracts, ALA may prevent oxidative stress in the eye lens by sparing vitamin C, whose transport is affected by the disease. Lipoic acid can utilize a lipid transport mechanism and help prevent a localized intracellular vitamin C deficiency, which is known to a play a key role in the development of cataracts. Because insulin resistance generally increases with age, ALA has the potential of protecting more than just those individuals who are currently afflicted with diabetes.

Lipoic Acid and HIV:
Oxidative stress (free-radical damage), is believed to play a major role in Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. Some patients with HIV have been shown to be deficient in a variety of antioxidants. A recent study examined the use of Lipoic acid supplementation on a group of HIV positive individuals. At the end of a three week period, patients were determined to have increased levels of plasma vitamin C and glu-tathione and a corresponding decrease in lipid peroxidation.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid: More Than an Antioxidant
There are numerous molecules, known as free radicals, which cause us to age rapidly and may contribute to serious health problems. Most of these free radicals, whether they come from pollution, smoke or chemicals, can be controlled by a group of nutrients called antioxidants. One excellent example of an antioxidant is Alpha-Lipoic Acid, a substance found in food and manufactured in small quantities by the body. In 1988, it was discovered that Alpha-Lipoic Acid was a powerful metabolic antioxidant. When taken within a comprehensive antioxidant regime, Alpha-Lipoic Acid replenishes Vitamin C and glutathione and helps to recycle Vitamin E. As an added benefit, Alpha-Lipoic Acid promotes cellular and muscular energy and functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of sugars.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid supplementation is necessary whenever increased energy is required; periods of strenuous physical activity and a desire for optimum vitality are excellent examples of situations with this need. It is a powerful liver detoxifier and protects against the effects of toxic metals in the liver. In addition to its effect on the repair and protection of the liver, Alpha-Lipoic Acid helps to supply energy to the brain and boosts the effectiveness of the immune system.

As an antioxidant, Alpha-Lipoic Acid is unique because it is both fat- and water-soluble. Because of this property, it can enter all areas of the cell affected by free radicals. Alpha-Lipoic Acid also helps to convert pyruvate into acetyl coenzyme A, one of the main fuels driving the Krebs Cycle, which provides the body with its energy. As a result, one can improve the body's rate of metabolism of fats and carbohydrates while increasing athletic strength and endurance.

When combined with other antioxidants, Alpha-Lipoic Acid has the ability to lengthen cell life, fight infection, increase energy and detoxify the body.

Usage:
No serious side effects have been noted in Alpha-lipoic acid supplementation in either human or animal studies. Suggested dosages run between 50 and 200 mg per day or as directed. Although the benefits of Alpha-lipoic acid have been well documented, this marvelous nutrient is just now taking its place as the "Universal Antioxidant."
