Black Cohosh - The Chill Pill
for Hot Flashes
Actually reduces the frequency
and severity
of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.
- Helps regulate body temperature
- Restores normal menstrual functions after
childbirth
- Free of side effects
Used by Native Americans,
Europeans and Chinese for centuries, Black
Cohosh has gone by many names including, Cimecifuga Racemosa, Squaw Root, Rattle
Snake Root and Black Snake Root.
Native Americans used Black
Cohosh for a variety of female problems. It
was used to return a woman to her pre-pregnancy state after childbirth, to restore
normal menstrual functions and for menopause. Scientific studies on both animals
and women have shown that the various components of Black Cohosh act on the hormonal
system.
A recent study has
shown that Black Cohosh does not produce any estrogen effects. Rather, it binds
with the human serotonin receptors including those which help regulate body temperature.
Previous studies have shown that these receptors may play a role in regulating
hot flashes. Antidepressant medications, also seem to bind to the same receptors
which may explain why they appear to help reduce hot flashes.
The National Institute of
Health is currently funding a
study to determine whether or not Black Cohosh actually reduces the frequency
and severity of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. This will be one of
the largest and longest studies of its kind.
Many studies have been done
on Black Cohosh, comparing it
to Estrogen Replacement (for both physical and psychological symptoms) and Valium
(for psychological) and to women who do not take anything.. Several of the studies
have shown that the women who took Black Cohosh found their symptoms (both physical
and psychological) improved over those who took nothing and were comparable to
those who took either Estrogen or Valium.
Black Cohosh has also been
found to be free of the side effects commonly
associated with hormone replacement therapy. There has been no association with
increased breast cancer rates or with dysfunctional uterine bleeding. It is not
habit-forming and does not interact with other medications. Black Cohosh is considered
nontoxic and over 93% of the women in one study reported no side effects and no
evidence of discontinuation due to side effects was noted.. Nausea and vomiting
can be due to an overdose.
Results have been found
in as little as four weeks, but six to eight weeks is more common. If after twelve
weeks, there has been no relief of symptoms has been noticed discontinuation should
be considered, however, there are no known effects with long term use.
Native Americans
also used Black Cohosh to treat a variety of other
ailments such as, sore throats, malaria, kidney problems and rheumatic problems,
but none of these have been documented as well as menstrual irregularity and meno
