In recent years,
a new emphasis has developed on the importance
of antioxidants in the prevention of illness. An increasing scientific body of
knowledge on the health benefits of antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, Vitamin
E and Beta-Carotene, has helped fuel the demand for these nutrients.
How Antioxidants Work:
Oxidation is caused by free radical molecules that
are missing an electron. These "rogue" molecules crash into stable molecules
and "steal" back their missing electron. This sets off a chain reaction
where molecule after molecule are destabilized. The process can seriously damage
proteins, cell membranes and DNA, leading to a multitude of health problems.
Antioxidants and the Heart:
A major development in cardiovascular research
is the finding that oxidative reactions play a key role in atherogenesis, and
that heart disease is usually associated with low plasma levels of vitamin C,
E and beta-carotene.
In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 34,486 postmenopausal
women with no cardiovascular disease were assessed for the intake of vitamins
C, A and E from the diet and supplements. After 7 years of follow up, the researchers
reported that there was a strong relationship between vitamin E intake and a corresponding
reduction in cardiovascular disease.
Exercise and Antioxidants:
Antioxidants can protect the cells and muscles
from the damage that can result from extensive exercise, such as aerobics or weight
training. Both the weekend warrior and the individual who works out regularly
are at risk for cellular damage due to the production of free radical compounds.
The best protection is to build up antioxidant protection prior to exercising.
Antioxidants can also help in the recovery phase since they help reduce the damage
that oxidants can cause to muscle tissue.
Antioxidants and Cataracts:
Cataract removal is a common operation in the
US and may be preventable with antioxidant therapy. Taylor et al., recently
reviewed the impressive evidence that cataracts are caused by oxidative damage
to the lens and that dietary antioxidants can prevent their formation. Epidemiological
studies that have examined the effects of dietary antioxidants conclude that
taking daily supplements of vitamin C and E can reduce the risk of cataracts
by two-thirds.
Antioxidants and Cancer:
Antioxidants may help prevent cancer by decreasing
the oxidative damage to healthy cells and by lowering the cellular division
rate in pre-cancerous cells. Other research has demonstrated the important role
that dietary antioxidants play in lowering the incidence of a wide range of
cancers in humans.
Pycnogenol and SOD:
Other antioxidant like compounds include the
potent compound, Pycnogenol. This phyto-chemical is extracted from the bark
of the European Coastal Pine. Pycnogenol contains a unique group of compounds
called proanthrocyandins that act as potent free radical scavengers.
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is a natural enzyme found in the tissues of the body
and is one of the most potent antioxidant that humans have. SOD is a free-radical
fighter that helps control the amount of oxygen radicals in the blood and tissues.
