Saw Palmetto
(Serenoa repens) is a small palm tree with large leaves and deep red berries.
The berries were used by the American Indians for a variety of problems such as
urinary tract infections, prostate health, and even impotence and infertility.
Recent clinical trials have shown that Saw Palmetto is helpful in the treatment
of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and minor prostate problems. BPH is a condition
where the prostate gland may grow from the size of a small walnut to as large
as a small orange. This condition, although not malignant, can cause a blockage
of the urethra and require surgery.
BPH and Saw Palmetto:
Clinical research
has substantiated the use of Saw Palmetto extracts in cases of BPH. Its mechanism
of action has been reported to be its ability to inhibit the conversion of testosterone
to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a major factor in the onset of BPH. Saw Palmetto
extracts also inhibit the binding of DHT to receptor sites. It has been suggested
that too much DHT could cause the prostate cells to divide and multiply at an
abnormal rate that can lead to an enlargement of the prostate gland.
A double-blind controlled study was performed with thirty-five patients with benign
prostatic hyperplasia who were not previously treated. The patients were randomized
into two groups with one group receiving 160 mg of a Saw Palmetto extract per
day, and the other a placebo. After three months tests were performed to determine
if the treated individuals showed variations in prostate tissue samples. The study
showed that S. repens extracts are able to inhibit the binding of estrogenic compounds
to receptor sites located in the prostate. This
effect is one of the potential factors in the reduction of BPH by Saw Palmetto
extracts.
Prostatic Adenoma and Saw Palmetto:
The treatment of urethra
obstruction in prostatic adenoma using extracts of Serenoa repens (Saw Palmetto)
was tested with 27 patients in a double-blind clinical study. The extracts effectively
improved urinary symptoms and urine flow in 43% of the cases vs. only a 15%
improvement in the placebo controlled group. Tolerance as measured by blood
pressure, pulse rate, and clinical exams was excellent.
Natural Saw Palmetto extracts contain oils comprised
of sterols and various saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (no cholesterol).
The sterols contain beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, both of which appear to
be active components of Saw Palmetto berries. As the population ages, nutritional
