NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT FOR HEALTHY JOINTS
Human connective tissue
is subjected to constant stress that can result in a variety of disorders including
arthritis, joint inflammation, and stiffness. These types of afflictions effect
millions of Americans on a daily basis.Connective tissue is naturally equipped
to repair itself by manufacturing collagen and proteo-glycans, two key components
of connective tissue. Proteoglycans form the framework for the production of collagen
and the elasticity of cartilage and connective tissue.
Glucosamine sulfate provides the primary substrate for the production of collagen
and proteo-glycan synthesis. A deficiency in the conversion of glucose to Glucosamine
is the rate-limiting step in the production of proteoglycans and the formation
of connective tissue. Research indicates that glu-cosamine sulfate can aid in
osteoarthritis, joint pain, and damaged tendons and ligaments.
CARTILAGE AND OSTEO-ARTHRITIS:
Chondroitin sulfate is a major component of proteoglycans and provides a substrate
for the synthesis of cartilage. Some researchers suggest that the sulfate molecules
are re-used by the body in the synthesis of connective tissue. Although Chondroitin
sulfate is an important compound in the production of connective tissue, the use
of whole trachea cartilage may be more beneficial.
Trachea cartilage (from bovine) contains large amounts of Chondroitin sulfate
and Type II collagen that can stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory compounds.
Dr. J. Prudden MD., has treated numerous arthritic patients with bovine trachea
cartilage and has found that it reduces inflammation and helps promote the synthesis
of cartilage and connective tissue. Dr. Prudden tested the effects of oral bovine
cartilage on several hundred cases of osteo-arthritis. The results indicated that
over 59% of the patients experienced excellent results and 26% showed significant
improvement. The average length of treatment was six to eight weeks and no side
effects were noted.
CARTILAGE AND RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS:
Rheumatoid arthritis is classified as an autoimmune disease in which the body
attacks its own tissues. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is extremely painful and afflicts
millions of Americans. Current research involves the use of cartilage in the reduction
of pain and inflammation in RA.
Clinical studies using chicken trachea cartilage demonstrated significant improvement
in the above areas when compared to the placebo group. The above trial was a double-blind
study that was conducted for 90 days and involved the use of small amounts of
collagen from trachea tissue. Research in the use of collagen protein suggests
that cartilage extracts can act as immuno-suppressants by altering T-cell activity
around the inflamed joints or tissues.
The use of glucosamine sulfate and trachea cartilage complex may be more effective
than using glucosamine and pure Chondroitin sulfate. This exceptional combination
may elicit anti-inflammatory and immuno-suppressive activity when taken as a nutritional
aid in osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.
MSM AND THE JOINTS:
Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) is a readily absorbable source of sulfur, an element
that is essential to good health. Sulfur is critical in the formation of collagen
and plays a key role in the production of disulfide bonds which hold the molecular
strands of connective tissue together. MSM has also been shown to help reduce
inflammation of the joints.
HERBAL SUPPORT:
Joint formulas should also utilize standardized extracts of Boswellian and Turmeric
which have been used to help reduce inflamed tissue and joints. Manganese is an
important co-factor in the formation of cartilage and vertebral discs.
