L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid,
which is metabolized from Lysine and Methione. Essential for life, L-Carnitine
is involved in the transport of fatty acids into mitochondria. Without this
a decrease in energy production on the cellular level will occur.Carnitine is
primarily found in meat (in general the redder the higher) and dairy products,
while fruits, vegetables and grains contain little or none.
Deficiencies in L-Carnitine have been shown to have serious effects on the human

Studies have shown there is a direct correlation between age and L-Carnitine.
The levels of Carnitine in older people show a drastic reduction. Since Carnitine
has been shown to have antioxidant properties which prevent free-radical damage

supplementation with L-Carnitine has been shown to act as a precursor to acetylcholine

in AIDS patients has also been observed.
As we age oxidative metaoblism takes its toll on the body. One of the effects
of this aging process is hearing impairment. L-Carnitine helps to slow the decline
of the body as well as reverse the damange to the mitochondria. The use of Acetyl-L-Carnitine
has been shown to have a positive effect on the hearing response.
L-Carnitine is not only an effective supplement for people suffering from specific

Skeletal muscle is also dependent on an adequate supply of carnitine for the
efficient use of fatty acids.
Double blind studies using both athletes and non-athletes showed significant
improvement in cardiovascular funtions in both groups who had received the carnitine
supplementation (2 grams two to three times a day). When compared to the unsupplemented
control groups, the subjects on carnitine showed improvement in exercise intensity
and time but also in improved energy metabolism within the muscle which resulted
in lower blood lactic acid and free fatty acid levels. '
It was also shown that athletes taking carnitine showed a more rapid return
to resting heart rate after exercise.
