Soya Isoflavones and Your
Health
Soybeans are a highly nutritious food source
that contain a variety of phytochemicals, plant derived compounds that exert
biochemical effects on the body. Soybeans are one of the only foods that contain
significant amounts of Isoflavones, a group of phytochemicals that exhibit estrogen-like
activity when consumed. Isoflavones are chemically similar to the hormone estrogen,
and display estrogenic effects that are linked to a variety of benefits, including
a reduction in the rates of coronary heart disease, breast and prostate cancer,
bone loss and menopausal symptoms.
Isoflavones and Menopause:
Current estrogen replacement therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms
can cause several unwanted side effects, including a higher risk of breast cancer.
Recent clinical studies involving the use of soybean protein demonstrate that
women consuming 45 grams of soy protein per day (45 mg of isoflavones), have
a 40% reduction in the symptoms of menopause (hot flashes and night sweats).
In most cases, women reported symptomatic relief after taking soy protein for
only 12 weeks. Other studies indicate that soy protein can help normalize the
menstrual cycle in pre-meno-pausal women.
Isoflavones and Cancer:
Isoflavones have weak estrogenic activity, but compete directly with more potent
endogenous estrogen for available receptor sites in the body. Since high levels
of circulating estrogen are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, soy
isoflavones may play a protective role in reducing this type of disease. An
epidemiological study in Japan, compared the mortality rates from breast cancer
to those found in the United States. Japan was found to have a 75% lower mortality
rate which may be linked to a
high soy protein diet. Recently, a case-controlled study found that soy consumption
was associated with a 50% decrease in breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Numerous studies with the isoflavone genistein (a major isoflavone found in
soy proteins), demonstrate its ability to inhibit a wide range of cancer cells
in-vitro. Several studies have shown that genistein can inhibit the growth of
both estrogen-dependent and estrogen-independent breast cancer cells.
Prevent Bone Loss:
Isoflavones play a key role in preventing the bone loss associated with osteoporosis.
Daidzein, another major isoflavone found in soy foods, resembles the drug, ipriflavone,
a isofla-vone-like drug used to treat osteoporosis throughout Asia and Europe.
Recent animal studies have clearly demonstrated the ability of daidzein to prevent
bone resorbtion and osteoporosis. This compound is a metabolite of the drug
ipriflavone and may be the reason that this drug works so well in humans.
An added benefit to taking soy protein is that it can help with the absorption
of calcium by supplying amino acids that help facilitate the transfer of calcium
into the blood stream.
