"One gram of preventative phytonutrients
is better than a ton of curative drugs." When Dr. James Duke of the United
States Department of Agriculture made this statement, did he hear all mothers
telling their children to eat their fruits and vegetables? As mothers for many
generations have known, fruits and vegetables are the basic suppliers of nutrients,
which promote good health. But even knowing this, the modern American diet rarely
includes the five servings of fruits and vegetables that are recommended. Though,
not a replacement for eating fruits and vegetables, Supreme Greens is a great
source for both phytonutrient and vitamin supplementation. The combination of
broccoli, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, beets, soy grits and orange peel work
to provide many of the phytonutrients we rely on.
Phytonutrients are certain organic components of plants that are thought to
promote health. Neither vitamins nor minerals, phytonutrients are those compounds
that give fruits and vegetables their flavor and color. The most common classes
of phytonutrients are: carotenoids, flavonoids, phenols and terpenes.
Each of the vegetables and fruit contribute to the completeness of this formula.
In addition to helping prevent ulcers, broccoli is a good source of carotenoids
(beta-carotene and lutein). From carrots we get another form of carotenoid,
alpha-carotene. Spinach is another contributor of lutein and iron to the diet.
The lycopene found in tomatoes has been credited with fighting various forms
of cancer. In addition to beta-carotene, the orange peel is a good source of
Vitamin C, potassium, calcium, citrus flavonoids and Vitamin A. Another Vitamin
A and potassium supplier is the Beet Powder in the Supreme Greens formula. And
finally from the Soy Grits comes soy protein, isoflavones, fiber, potassium,
calcium and iron.
The various ingredients and their component parts play important roles in our
daily lives. Terpenes are credited with helping battle certain cancers and heart
disease. Carotenoids, a subclass of terpenes are well known to most people as
they contain, alpha- and beta-carotene, and lutein. Carotenoids play several
roles in human health, the most studied and understood of which is the provitamin
an activity. In addition, carotenoids act as biological antioxidants protecting
the body from free radical damage. The lutein from green leafy vegetables is
known to protect the macular region of the eye.
Polyphenols are among the most potent plant antioxidants and can form complexes
with reactive metals such as copper, iron and zinc-reducing the excess levels
of such elements, which cause free radicals. Polyphenols come in two classifications:
non-flavonoids and flavonoids. Polyphenols appear to fight allergies, inflammation,
free radicals, ulcers, and some tumors. In addition, flavonoids also protect
the vascular system and block the enzyme responsible for raising blood pressure.
Citrus flavonoids (hesperidin, quiercetin, rutin and tangeritin) have been shown
to have many wonderful properties. Hesperiden helps in cholesterol and triglyceride
management as well having anti-inflammatory and analgesic affects. Quercitin
has been shown to reduce inflammation associated with allergies and inhibit
the growth of head and neck cancers.
Soy is a veritable nutrition powerhouse. Low in saturated fat and containing
no cholesterol, soy is high in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soy may be
instrumental in reducing the symptoms of menopause as well as the risk of developing
certain cancers, atherosclerosis, and possibly osteoporosis. Soy grits are high
in protein, which contains essential amino acids necessary for the building
and maintenance of human body tissues. Soy protein has been shown to have significant
cardiovascular protective properties. Clinical studies have shown that replacing
animal protein with soy protein in the diet lowers total and L.DL cholesterol
levels in people with high cholesterol.
